This seems to be a popular size as we have done a handful of proposals in this size range. This trideck motoryacht was designed in 2009. She is designed with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. The boat is a full displacement hull, powered by twin Caterpillar C32s.

Here are the general arrangements for upper and lower decks.

The 6-meter racing yacht Maybe VII (US87, originally S66) was built in 1952 to compete in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and the 1953 One Ton Cup, which was held on Long Island Sound. The boat was built of wood by the Tore Holm Yacht Yard of Gamleb, Sweden.  Holm was a very famous yacht designer in his own right.

She eventually made her way to the West Coast and is now part of the Puget Sound fleet.  She has undergone at least two major restorations.

Here is the Lines Plan.

More About Ananda Design 2390 C5

Back in April we posted an article about Ananda, the 50 sloop built by Carlini. A blog follower sent us these images. Here she is out of the water so you can get a good look at her shape.

And a couple of interior shots.

Shes currently lying in Genoa, Italy.  She has apparently been for sale since 2007.  The current asking price is €120,000.  Looking at some more detailed images she looks like she needs a complete exterior varnish job.  Otherwise she looks pretty good.  Please contact us if you want more information or the complete listing.  Thanks for sending these images.  We are always happy to receive images of the boats.

Design 1557 C3 Spirit

We have discussed the Spirit Class before and as shown in the above image.  The boat was designed as a flush-deck one-design class for San Fransisco Bay in the mid-1960s.  Although the class never took off the original Spirit was hugely successful and various sisters were built.  It has been difficult to track what boats were built.  Here is a list of owners and boats for this design in its various forms.

In 2000, Wooden Boat magazine published a ten page article about the boats (Wooden Boat #156).  Even here they reference the ever-allusive hull #6 as follows: A sixth boat is rumored to have been built of fiberglass in New Zealand.

I was finally able to track down this boat, also named Spirit (just to further confuse matters) and shown just above.  The boat was in fact built of fiberglass by the highly respected boatbuilder John Lidgard of Aukland in 1965.  She was built with a small, attractive deckhouse, the draft was increased to 6-10", a separate skeg and rudder were designed and her sail area reduced slightly.  Please note that the model with the small deckhouse was dubbed the Mariner Class.

Here are a couple of shots that give a peek at her underbody and a good look at her cockpit.

Here are the Plans.

Principal Dimensions
LOA 33-5"
LWL 28-6"
Beam 8-5"
Draft 6-10"

Dudley Dix Yacht Design Calendar 2015

0 komentar
Our 2015 calendar is ready and our first stocks arrived today. If you are a lover of our designs then this calendar will be a great piece of art to fill that empty space on the wall of your office, home or workshop.

The cover photo (also November) is a beautiful sunset photo sent by Phil Semenov of his self-built Didi 34, sailing in Ukraine.
Here are a few other sample pages.

June is a collage of photos showing the Cape Henry 21 built by Roeboats of Co Cork in Ireland. They used some interesting and very pretty detailing in this boat, built for a customer from France.
August is the Didi Sport 15 project of Hunter Gall in Virginia Beach, USA. She is named "Scallywag", which is what Hunters grandfather called him as a child. The main photo is an interesting view during construction and has a somewhat spiritual feel.
December is Petr Muziks Shearwater 39 "Shoestring III" sailing in St Helena Bay, South Africa. Petr circumnavigated on this boat when well into his seventies.
Order your calendar from our website via the link on our homepage at http://dixdesign.com/ and we will mail it to you.

Alternatively, click here to order from our  publisher, Lulu. They will print and ship one copy, or as many as you want, from their closest affiliate to your delivery address.

Either way, get yours now to be ready for January 2015.

If you have one of our boats and would like to see it featured in one of our calendars, please send me some nice high resolution photos of her. The pics need to show her in pretty surroundings or to be interesting in some other way. Now is a good time to start with the 2016 calendar.

Quicksilver Design 2158

I’ve been doing some research on this boat. It looks like we used the Lines and General Arrangement from an earlier design. The plans for design #2120, Gunfleet of Hamble were used for #2158, but with a different deck geometry and layout.

Interestingly #2120 was designed for aluminum construction and this boat was designed for wood construction. The statistics look pretty identical. The only major difference is the additional sail area that Quicksilver carries, and to handle that 1,450 lbs of internal ballast was added.

Reviewing the Lines Plan it also looks like the sheer was changed forward, adding more spring. This was probably done since Quicksilver was a wedge deck and Gunfleet was not and in addition the forward sections were filled out and the Lines and Table of Offsets adjusted accordingly.

Quicksilver is an Admirals Cup Racing yacht. She was built by Brin Wilson of New Zealand and launched in 1973.

Principal Dimensions
LOA 40-7"
LWL 30-3"
Beam 12-0"
Draft 6-6"
Displacement 17,675 lbs
Ballast 10,400 lbs (outside) 1,450 lbs (inside)
Sail Area 719 sq ft

More About Gosling Design 2070

0 komentar

About a year ago we posted an article about the 6-meter yacht Gosling, design #2070. We received the following note from her owner along with the image shown above.

Dear Sparkman & Stephens,

With great delight I found your article about design 2070 "Gosling" on your blog. I currently own the boat and, indeed, she is still on Lake Constance. Maybe youre interested what she currently looks like, I enclose a picture. The little cabin has been added in the mid eighties together with a small engine to make her more "family suited" which worked well for the past twenty years. Still a real beauty!

Congratulations to your blog, its very very interesting!

Yours sincerely,

Owner of Gosling

Thanks for reading and thank you for sending us the image.

Kees Prins and the Loon Design

Our friend Kees is at it again. He is a prolific boat builder and designer and a genius in my book. The modified Ed Davis Surf Dory, Sparrow, that graces the header of this weblog is one of his creations.

Another fine cruising dinghy he designed and built is the Townsend Tern, belonging to Chelcie and Kathy Liu of Port Townsend. He was instrumental in building the first Welsford Scamp and perhaps is best known today for his adaptation of an Iain Oughtred Fulmar dinghy  into the micro-cruiser Fetch.

This winter, while instructing boatbuilding at the Great Lakes Boat Building School, located in the Les Cheneaux Islands of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Kees has been working on his own design for a double-ended mini-cruiser called the Loon. What better occupation in a land where winter night is longer than the day? The UP is one of the rare places in the contiguous United States where its common to see the Aurora Borealis on a clear winter night. A frozen winter wonderland, not fit for man nor beast, but thats just one opinion...

The Loon is still in design stages and you are witness to the genius of the man behind her conception. If you study the drawings and models posted here, it will become readily apparent what I mean. You all know how much Doryman loves a double-ended sea vessel. One day he might be compelled to build a Loon, because she might be just the most perfectly conceived small trailerable cruiser available today.

Congratulations, Kees on a job well done! We look forward to the completed plans.
Anyone interested in developed plans for Loon should contact me soon.  Ill be sure Kees hears about it.

Design 2531 New Horizons 68

Here we have a preliminary design for a company called International Yachtbuilders, Ltd of New London, Connecticut. There is a note in the files regarding this design that reads "We have no idea if this boat was built or not." My supposition is that the boat was not built and that this was a marketing effort to see if they could rally any potential clients, at least to the point where this very simple brochure was produced. The design looks very well thought out. The year was 1987.

Design 2571 Preliminary Design of a Hinckley 54 Sloop

I dont recall the logic in designating this boat a 54er, which is her length on deck, versus her overall length of 57 but there must have been some marketing guru involved. This preliminary design was prepared for the Hinckley Company of Maine but never came to fruition. The year was 1990.

Here is the general arrangement plan.

Design 2676 Northwind 65

This is the largest of the boats designed for Northwind Yachts of Barcelona, Spain.  The 65 was designed in 2001.  Like the other Northwind models we designed the hull, rig, appendages, general arrangement, and engineered the structure.  The styling was provided by Northwind.  2 boats were built to this design before Northwind folded although we have since learned that at least one bastardized copy at 72 length overall was delivered.

Heres a look at her shape.

Here are the plans.

Design 438 YP 180 Conversion

0 komentar

In 1942 the U.S. Navy commissioned us prepare the plans to convert a number of World War I subchasers (SC designation) to yard patrol boats (YP designation). YP 180 was originally built by Elco (Electric Launch Company) in 1918. She was one of 442 SC-1s, the 110-foot subchasers built during WWI, with designation SC-101 and named Fidus.

The conversion was done at Fyfes Shipyard, Glenwood Landing, Long Island, New York. YP boats were used for coastal defense and also for naval training purposes. YP 180 operated with a complement of 2 officers and 18 crew.

Looking at the archives the following S&S design numbers were also YP conversions, all done in 1942: #425, #426, #427, #428, #429 and #440.

Here are the plans.

The boat was later converted into a fishing party boat operating out of Hoboken, New Jersey, and named Whitby III. She has since been scrapped (1970).

Design 1959 C3 Palmer Johnson 34

We have made numerous postings about this very successful design, the S&S 34.  She is design #1959.  We have had a number of confused buyers or owners inquiring about this particular version, the Palmer Johnson 34.  Lets set the record straight.  The Palmer Johnson 34 brochure lists Nautor of Finland as the builder.  That is completely false. Like the Swans that Palmer Johnson marketed and did not build themselves, these S&S 34s were marketed and sold by P.J. but built by Michael Winfield & Partners. Ltd. of England (later known as Aquafibre International).  We know of at least 12 units sold through P.J.

The boats were identical to the boats sold abroad with the exception of an increased sail plan.  The "I" dimension is 2-6" taller than the English counterparts resulting in a sail area increase of 27 square feet.  Heres the P.J. 34 sail plan.

And heres a copy of the original P.J. 34 brochure.  Note the misleading credit to the builder on the cover page. Also note the LOA is listed as 33-7".  This was probably done for marketing reasons only and is not correct.
